BUY THE KING OF CAMBODIA’S CAR

There’s a lot of Cambodia-related news right now, including the trial of a Long Beach accountant on charges of allegedly spearheading an attempted coup seven years ago in Cambodia; and the fourth annual Cambodian New Year Parade, which happens Sunday morning on Anaheim Street.

Also, if you’ve got the cabbage, you can buy the King of Cambodia’s car.

Not the current King of Cambodia’s car. Cambodia has a prime minister now: a man named Hun Sen.

No, this car is a 1952 Alfa Romeo Spider 2500–the big Alfa, before they started making ‘em small and Dustin Hoffman drove one in The Graduate.

And according to the eBay listing, the car’s body was bespoke: made in Argentina–and the vehicle may have been first sold to the King of Cambodia back in 1952. (It’s a little unclear.)

Interested? It’s a beautiful car–maroon bodywork, black-painted wire wheels (a nice way to turn down the volume a few clicks), and a tan leather interior. Also? A fairing behind the driver’s seat–and it’s right-hand drive.

Bad news: even though it’s fully restored and ready to run the Mille Miglia, the price tag is $230,000 or best offer. The auction closes on the afternoon of April 15, and so far there are five offers.

I wonder if the King of Cambodia really owned this one–or one similar–and if so, where he drove it.
