$200,000 MISSING FROM LOS ALAMITOS YOUTH SHELTER

Police investigation is ongoing

Sometimes, when people think of the children, it’s with their own selfish interests at heart–as in the case of whoever embezzled $200,000 recently, from the Casa Youth Shelter in Los Alamitos.

According to the Los Angeles Times, nearly 25 percent of the shelter’s $900,000 annual budget went missing when someone stole the identity of the shelter’s Executive Director Luciann Maulhardt–forging her name on shelter checks and making unauthorized charges on her credit card.

Maulhardt told The Times that a shelter employee was fired,  after the loss came to light last week. The Los Alamitos Police Department began investigating on Monday.

Services at the shelter, which helps families, runaways and teens with various life crises, won’t be affected, Maulhardt said.
