CHECK OUT THESE RECORDS (AUDIO EDITION!)
Check out how I finally wired the turntable into the computer. I got to get a pair of new needles/cartridges if anyone can point toward a deal since the thing I’m using now is a rusty hook I pried off a jawbone at the beach. These are actually records I got next to the set-up but next time I go out and farm I’ll put them up here as I actually listen to them. Oh, intimacies.
THE HOT DOGS “LOWDOWN” (ARDENT 1973)
Memphis power-pop who-thats? with Terry Manning (recent of Sonic Boom collaboration) on lead guitar. Badfinger/Big Star/Scruffs and actually it is pretty scruffy. Decent album if you see it.
ROY HALL “CHRISTINE” (UNISSUED 1955)
A Chris Classic. I had a sad mp3 of this forever and I had no idea it ever even made it to vinyl until I found a Charly comp of Roy at Amoeba. He was Webb Pierce’s piano player and he co-wrote “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On.”
LOUIE AND THE LOVERS “SITTIN’ BY YOUR RIVER” (EPIC 1970)
CCR-a-likes produced by Doug Sahm. Fast CCR, slow CCR, happy CCR, sad CCR—they CCR it all. Not a slam but there’s definitely a lot of focus in the sound. They Sahm-a-like sometimes, too.
BOBBY WHITLOCK “HELLO L.A., BYE BYE BIRMINGHAM” (DUNHILL 1972)
Dude decked out Satanic Majestly on the cover and covering the Delaney/Bonnie song Blue Cheer did more famously. This one is much harder and crazier than the Blue Cheer one, Blue Cheer being headed pasture-ward by those days, but a lot of the rest of this is record is pretty standard-ish blues-freak rock.
ANNETTE PEACOCK “MY MAMA NEVER TAUGHT ME HOW TO COOK” (AURA 1978)
Found out about her from Mike in Deadly Finns. Supposedly Bowie was trying to get her in his clutchie claws but she said nope and walked it alone. I think Mick Ronson is on here, tho. Hot spot in the mix is hers, not mine. Mean lean song—Wanda Robinson plus Betty Davis. Also good lyrics: “I want you to die so I can BE you.” Another store-guy-tip if you like this: Lottie Golden.
CRYAN SHAMES “GREENBURG, GLICKSTEIN, CHARLES, DAVID SMITH AND JONES” (COLUMBIA 1968)
Dragged from the record collection of one of the best press-relations guys I ever traded emails with. Solid album all the way.
