THOMAS MURPHY PASSES
LBReport has the story on the passing of Thomas Murphy, a lifetime Long Beach resident and an outspoken critic of the city’s status quo. LBReport cites this telling quote from Murphy:
“In my [80+, fill in the annual figure] years in Long Beach, the city hasn’t been able to complete a single project that hasn’t turned out to be a financial disaster or an environmental mess.”
His 90 years just weren’t enough.

My favorite Thom Murphy speech:
http://longbeach.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?v...
Go to about 1 hour 40 minutes into the meeting. There had just been a
shooting on Pine Ave. and Jimmy (From George’s Greek) is there to
complain. Each council district chimes in with tales of how bad crime is
in their districts and then Murphy pipes up with this seemingly
nonsensical story about how it used to be….ending in “Please, children
of all schools, put down your weapons. We need to work together and be a
little more neighborly. If you must use a weapon, please join a branch
of the Armed Services. They could use a few more good men. Thank you.”
Amazing.
