Westboro Baptist Church–better known as the “God Hates Fags” whackos, world-famous for their elegance and subtle wit–graciously, generously offering instruction to the citizens of Long Beach later this month.

On February 19th & 20th WBC will be visiting our fair city, and they’ve got a lot to say.  About gays, Jews, Catholics, Lutherans, Democrats, Obama supporters, the US military (yep, they hate you, too!) and Americans in general.

These guys are a party and a half, as their itinerary makes plain.  Their web server seems to have come from a box of Cracker Jack–it’ll take 90 minutes for their homepage to load on your browser–so I’ll give you the text below.  Complaints related to spelling and grammar should be directed to the WBC.  Not us.

    What's most interesting to me is that apparently some "minorities" are more socially acceptable than others. More specifically at least in Southern California it is glaringly apparent that it is better to be gay than to be Latino! I can hardly read an article in the LA Times, or the Press Telegram or even this weekly with any topic remotely related to Latinos and Hispanics that doesn't bring out the hysterical chatter from "concerned" and fed" up citizens bemoaning the unbearable toll that "illegal aliens" are wreaking on our Good Ole USA!

    Maybe the Westboro Groups is right, and it is because mainstream white America has given in to the wishes and desires of the homosexual community that America is in the calamity it finds itself in--astronomical national debt that will never be able to be repaid (primarily due to the exorbitant costs of war, and the usury interest paid to the Federal Reserve bank), loss of America's industrial base and the accompanying jobs, loss in real income for the average American over the last generation leading to an insurmountable disparity between the haves and the have-nots!

    I guess according to all the commenters here, true racist supremacist sentiment is still reserved just for that-a white homosexual is still preferable over a dark skinned illegal alien!

    Now I'm not advocating any particular response here. The best approach is almost certainly to ignore them, failing that to treat them like amusing oddities: "Look kiddo, over there: see those silly, angry people? We call them 'Crazy'. Don't feed them!"

    As for the Tea Party snark: I know, I know, but I couldn't resist. When I hear people say, in the same breath, that Obama is a *Muslim,* and they don't like his *minister,* or that he's a Socialist AND a Marxist AND a fascist, or when they carry those truly disturbing signs showing Obama as the Joker with his face painted white and his mouth slit open on either side, well, it seems to be encroaching on WBC territory. To me, anyway. These nuts yank their kids out of school because it's fascist indoctrination for the President to tell kids to work hard and graduate. They have accused Obama of setting up "reeducation camps." They have accused the President of the United States of planning to euthanize anyone over the age of 60. So yeah, I think they're nuts.

    They can dress their paranoid and frequently racist arguments up with political buzzwords plucked from the 18th Century, but carrying a copy of the "Don't Tread on Me" flag doesn't make them Keepers of the Flame. I'll bet you all of my belongings that less than 1% of those assholes have ever read the Lincoln-Douglas debates, or made it all the way through Thomas Paine.

    So I like to get a dig in whenever possible.

  • Rachel, I grew up in the Chicago area in the 70's. (Google Skokie, Illinois, 1977-78). The Woody Allen scene you describe takes on a much greater meaning when placed in its historical context.

    When Mel Brooks made The Producers many people disapproved of what they saw as a light-hearted treatment of Hitler. To which Mr. Brooks said, "He killed 6 million of my people! I can make whatever jokes I want at his expense."

    My husband has been walking around saying, "biting satire? or bricks and bats?" for a week, and he lived in a northwest suburb of Chicago (Schaumberg) from 1969 until 1987. As a Jew he was definitely aware of what was going on in Skokie; at the time it was discussed in solemn tones over dinner with his parents and two sisters. And he finds the scene pretty funny.

    I don't need to have lived in the Chicago area for any length of time to appreciate how terrifying it must have been for everyone in the area, especially the large numbers of Holocaust survivors then living in Skokie. In fact, I have very clear memories of watching the news coverage out here: I remember seeing a news clip of people shaking their fists at the marchers, and I remember asking my mom what they were angry about. And I remember her trying to explain to me--I was seven--who these monsters were.

    Anyway, the scene makes *me* laugh.

    Rachel, thank you for helping expose these people. You are brave, as well as a fine writer. It was hard for me to even skim this tripe. Even though I was born a Jew (and, as my late father would have said, whether you stay with the faith or not, you're still a Jew to people like this), I don't feel that silence and not paying attention to them is the answer. My feeling is the old saw: Evil occurs when good men do nothing. I feel that, especially, an example of protest should be set for the Wilson kids on the part of those who are horrified and disgusted--this is the fine group of folks who carried signs reading "God Hates Fags" and like sentiments in front of the grief-stricken parents at the funerals of Matthew Shepherd (the young man in Wyoming strung up to die by three homophobic young people) and a gay soldier. Several counterprotests are being planned in front of Wilson on the 19th. This is hate talk, this is threats, and anyone thinking that a small group of nutcases doesn't pose an immediate threat needs to check recent history.

    That's definitely a consideration. Although most of the people responding to this are reading from the same book, they're not on the same page as to how to deal with them. Some are saying that not giving any attention to them is the best way, because attention and discord are what feeds them (they call themselves Christians but are more like demons). Others are calling for calm protests, with tape across the mouth. But their message is so vile that folks quick to anger may respond in kind. I like your idea--kind of like Michael Jackson's funeral--why not bill this "church" for bringing out a police presence?
    To the credit of Wilson School, I understand that they're going to turn this into a day of education. Handled correctly, this is part of the cure. Combats ignorance.

    Actually, it's even worse. You missed one. They're coming back to Alpert JCC on the 21st. A couple of things related to the comments: This is a religious group. It's an organized church and it spreads this in the name of God. But that's not evidence that all religion is bad. Another point: It is hate. We can objectively define hate and the definition is not dependent on whether I agree or disagree with the message. While I agree that the best way to deal with these Westboro clowns is to ignore them, I think we need to insist on (and deserve) intellectual honesty among ourselves when discussing these kinds of issues. After all, that's something these hateful people lack.

    Doesn't this qualify as threatening domestic terrorism? I would think the JCC and other named entities should at least be getting extra security from our men and women in blue. I don't want to give these people the exposure; on the other hand, I think we ignore them at our own risk. "Crazy" does not mean "not allowed to purchase guns or the makings of explosive devices" unfortunately.
