Belgian Strong Dark Ales

Belgian. Strong. Dark. These three words are an invitation into a group of Belgian-brewed and Belgian-inspired ales that offer the complexity of the finest red wines. Belgian strong dark ales are typified by a rich maltiness with fruit-forward flavors and aromas such as plums, figs and raisins. They often finish with an alcohol warmth like that of rum. The hops are in the background and offer just enough bitterness to offset the sweet malts. And while many strong dark ales begin with a certain sweetness, they finish dry and have prickly carbonation that makes them incredibly drinkable. Belgian yeasts employed during fermentation are also known for imparting a variety of spice notes into the finished beer, such as clove and black pepper. The most widely available version from Belgium is Chimay’s Blue Label. With a massive fruity aroma and complex maltiness, this beer is a great introduction to the style. For those seeking a stronger version with a little less fruit character and more spicy notes, Trappistes Rochfort’s 10 is and excellent choice. Russian River brewing of Sonoma County makes a fantastic interpretation of the style with Salvation, a limited offering that makes its way into bottles and draft once or twice a year. And in recent years, many of Belgium’s well-established dark ales have become widely available in the United States. Chimay’s Blue Label, Brouwerij Van Steenberge’s Gulden Draak and Trappistes Rochefort’s 10 are readily had by a trip to your local BevMo! or Whole Foods. Enjoy them in a wide-mouth glass, allowing the full aromas and flavors to be absorbed. Now that cooler weather is upon us, these beers offer an excellent way to warm the soul. Cheers!
