Build-Your-Own Beer Flights

The success of a sports bar, it seems, is far more dependent upon the dimensions of its TVs than the breadth of its bar, a misplaced priority that leaves drinkers with few choices other than the usual watery lagers. But when pitchers of the same old brews just won’t do, there’s Shipmates in Cerritos. Shipmates has a particularly impressive selection of draft beers, a cast of 34 imports and crafts that far surpasses typical sports-bar standards. Paulaner’s Oktoberfest is an essential, occasionally hard-to-find import, while the more-common Smithwick’s is a welcome option, as well. Still, the bar’s domestic craft-beer selection is what makes Shipmates so formidable. It’s an extensive list that includes Dogfish Head’s best-in-class 90 Minute IPA, Rogue’s excellent Dead Guy Ale and Stone’s famous Arrogant Bastard Ale. Pints are fairly priced, but as you inevitably end up ordering more than your liver can handle, fatigue is bound to set in after the first few brews. Shipmates, however, has a supremely smart remedy for that: build-your-own beer flights. You can choose either five six-ounce pours for $10 or 10 for $14, totaling 30 or 60 ounces of beer, respectively. There aren’t any restrictions, either; you can pick freely from that extensive selection of drafts. All that quality (and, frankly, more potent) beer will spoil you. You’ll never want a simple pitcher again.

    Hey,
Have you thought of doing bartender profiles w/ the drink article? The bartender at a place really makes an evening go from fun to fantastic. There is a big difference in being served by some grumpy barfly who managed to secure a job through friends, and being served by some sparkly-eyed flirt, who is happy to laugh at your stupid jokes, and pour heavy on the ole' rum n' coke. Lately, I've been re-connecting with a few old college friends (Fishwives Club: loud, proud, and tacky to a fault), and we've been hitting the local bars, playing some pool, cackling to each other about chick stuff. A few places were fun, some okay, but one guy has stood out. We've seen him at Alex's bar, Ashley's, and House of Hayden on different nights. His name is David, not sure about the last name, total sweetie. We got to talking when I was buying a few rounds for the girls. He's got keys to most of the bars in the city, and is well-traveled, so his bar chatter actually is pretty damn interesting. He volunteers sporadically at a marine rescue place, and has some awesome seal pics on his phone, just an all-round nice guy. We gave him our numbers for his text list. I don't pub crawl much, but I know me and the fishwives club are down with slamming some brews, and shooting pool more often, if he is at the bar. Anyway, thought it would be a fun idea to have BackBar: Bartender profiles: best drink, best joke, best customer story, fave holiday to work etc. Just some silly fun.
