DRINK OF THE WEEK
Fat Tire in a can

A friend I hadn’t seen in a while popped in (which is almost always a no-no, even if you live upstairs) after an afternoon session at a local Irish pub. With booze on his breath, he suggested we finish the cheap beer in my fridge and then walk to the liquor store for a case of something better. It was Saturday afternoon, and I was in my pajamas; I couldn’t say no. The buzzer announced our arrival, and I knew I had to make a beeline to Fat Tire because it’s the only moderately hoity-toity drink my friend and I agree on. We got to the cooler, and there it sat. But wait, this wasn’t the beer we both knew and loved. This thing was in a can. A can! Jaws on the floor, we looked at each other in a state of shock as our confused minds were drawn to the magical unknown, like the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency to questionable ideas. Yes, we wanted bottles, but what was this mystery drink? The owner popped his head out and said that what we were staring at was indeed Fat Tire in a can. At this point, we had to try it. We opened one and agreed that, although it wasn’t as good as its bottled counterpart, it was getting the job done. Five beers later, my backyard fire pit was roaring, my friend was rocking his banjo, and I was crushing cans like the Lakers will (hopefully) crush the Nuggets. Whodathunk?
