STATE SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BAN
Long Beach demonstration and rally scheduled Tuesday night at 7
The New York Times is reporting that, in a decision made public earlier today, the California Supreme Court upheld our state’s ban on same-sex marriage, “ratifying a decision made by voters last year that runs counter to a growing trend of states allowing the practice.
“The decision, however, preserves the 18,000 marriages performed between the court’s decision last May that same-sex marriage was lawful and the passage by voters in November of Proposition 8, which banned it,” the Times‘ John Schwartz writes. “Supporters of the proposition argued that the marriages should no longer be recognized.”
And, over at LBEquality.org, there’s word of a demonstration and rally beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Alamitos Avenue and Broadway Avenue, with a rally afterwards at the Bixby Park band shelter, at First Street and Cherry Avenue.
“Bring signs, especially old Prop. 8 signs,” the website suggests. “We will be demonstrating.”
And First District Councilman Robert Garcia has issued a statement on the court’s ruling.
“”The court’s decision has only made the movement for Marriage Equality stronger,” Garcia writes. “I am confident that history is on our side, and that our movement fueled by love and compassion will win–and win soon.”
