POLICE WOUND SUSPECTED GUNMAN
Police officers shot and wounded a man late Sunday in west Long Beach whom authorities said Monday morning may have have shot and wounded another man nearby.
In what became the Long Beach Police Department’s 13th officer-involved shooting in the last 12-and-a-half months, officers at the West Police Sub-Station heard shots being fired at approximately 10:45 p.m. Sunday.
Here’s the Press-Telegram’s coverage of the incident.
Police officers responded, per a police department press release issued early Monday, to the area of 19th Street and Caspian Avenue, and were flagged down by residents who told them that a potential suspect had fled east down 19th Street.
They searched the area, found the suspect, and “that subject produced a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred.”
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Long Beach police officers recovered a handgun at the scene; and upon a search of the vicinity, officers found a second man in the 1600 block of West 19th Street, who had been shot in the torso.
The second man, who also was not identified, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
And, per the press release, “[the] investigation will determine if the suspect in the officer involved shooting is also responsible for shooting the male victim.”
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office will conduct its own investigation of the incident–which, as the Long Beach Police Department notes, is standard operating procedure for all officer-involved shootings in Los Angeles County wherein someone is “hit.”
Long Beach police ask anyone with information on this incident to call Long Beach Police homicide Detectives David Rios and Daniel Mendoza at 562.570.7244.
