JENSEN WILL OPPOSE DELONG FOR 3RD DISTRICT SEAT

Terry Jensen, a business and real estate consultant who supported Gary DeLong’s run for the Long Beach City Council’s in 2006, tells The District Weekly that he will file papers Monday to become a candidate against DeLong’s run for re-election in the 3rd district next year.

“Four years ago I told Gary that I wished were nine of him on the City Council—I thought he was going to do a great job,” says Jensen 64, a lifetime resident of Long Beach. “But DeLong has been involved in four train-wreck budgets, and we’re headed for another one next year. I have yet to see him work for any substantive change on how we are going to manage our resources. I have multiple dissatisfactions with the direction he and the current administration are going.”

Jensen gave voice to some of them in this July interview with The District Weekly.

Jensen was a leading opponent of Measure I, the property parcel tax proposed by Mayor Bob Foster and supported by DeLong, in 2008. In fact, he accepted an invitation to debate Foster at the August 2008 meeting of the Long Beach Press Club—an invitation the Mayor declined.

Jensen also opposed the recent land swap with Tom Dean—a well-connected supporter of DeLong and Foster—that traded the city’s Public Service Yard for Los Cerritos Wetlands-area property. The exchange, which the city auditor judged was financially lopsided in favor of Dean, is currently on hold because of the discovery of pollutants on the wetlands-area property.

“DeLong has been involved with one fiscal disaster after another,” says Jensen. “In the just-passed city budget he voted to give increases to just about every department knowing the city is broke. Somebody has got to step up and do something. I’m going to try.”

I hope that Terry will tell "us" just what type of indication(s) of support his exploratory committee is looking for. I will be thrilled and delighted to support him in any way possible. He was a great 8th district neighbor; many of us were hoping he would be our next councilperson.

The 8th district's loss is the 3rd district's gain; please don't blow it. The most foolish/counterproductive thing that could happen now is for the 3rd to field too many candidates which could dilute/spread the vote and allow the incumbent to be re-elected.

If history is any kind of teacher, look for the "power pricks" to recruit at least one "tool" to run as a spoiler. Their goal will actually be to get the incumbent re-elected but they will provide their spoiler with only enough resources to attack a challenger like Terry Jensen in the hopes of diluting the anti-incumbent vote.

    CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Look for that phony prick unionboss from the chamber to scrum up some stooge to "run".
Where does his last mark, josh lowenthal, live?
randy have you thought about justin rudd? He does a lot of good but he sure noticed that money flows and follows.
  • Justin came very close to running for Council last time but thought better of it at the last minute. This, to my mind, was both a blessing and a curse for all of us in the 3rd.

Justin might have made an excellent Council member but his strongest talents lie in other areas of public service, most especially in the volunteer arena. Our city benefits far more greatly and is a much better place because C.A.T. exists and because Justin remains in place to lead them.

On the other hand a City Council full of people of Justin Rudd's moral caliber, humility, fiscal responsibility and civic dedication would make a fine City finer still.

    You are right on target.

The ideal situation would be for Gary De Long to just drop out.He knows that
his former supporter is well qualified. He,knows also;he agreed to run not
fully understanding what the job entailed;now realizes he simply lacks the
    DNA to do the job.

What remains to be seen is if he has the character to stand up and do what
is best for the district and the the City.

Not sure if he partakes of such...but maybe we could buy him a bar stool at
one of his favorite spots on 2nd Street--or all of them-if that is what it takes!!!
  • phil
How Goodhue....are you one of the Belmont Shore goofs who bought a house next to 2nd street and are now complaining about the noise....pal you need your DNA checked and a drink!!!
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
    Phil:

As inndicated the answer to your question is no.

Yet,it is most telling for you to confirm De Long;s view of
resident's who must so suffer what they do----in large measure because De Long hands out variances like popcorn.
  • Laurence B, Goodhue
The answer to your question is no.Though I among am among the
increasing legions who have noticed a definite deterioration in caliber
of those that are flocking to Second Street. So to apparently has
Madison Ave et al which, say what you might about it-is generally, though not always, pretty much on target when committing
their dollars to something. They were targeting a sleaze market. They
did their sums(which by your post, you Phil, obviously do not). They
wanted to attract the sleaze element!! Where did they put their
    billboard?? Res Ipsa Loquitur!!!

Hi, Dave W--It's coming up on 7AM on Friday the 9th; I am wondering what Terry Jensen has done since you broke this story. Can you or anyone else enlighten me/us as to just what action(s) he has taken during the week? It will likely damage his credibility if he doesn't follow through and pull papers as he told you he would. THANKS!
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
RELATED STORY:Check LB Report on nice Kudos Foster received from T.Boone
    Pickens.

Maybe we could convince Pickens to hire Foster---and De Long----ship them
    back to Texas.

Their land swapping skills(buying toxic pig in poke) could be front and center
on their resume!!! The slight of hand bit with the parcel tax would surely be
    a clincher!!!

Anyone have Picken's contact number???Let us get the ball rolling. We might
be able to get them both out of town by the end of the month!!!!

For most of the people who don't follow the inner workings of government, a simple gauge of who would be working for what, is the "fruits of their labor". Jenson spearheaded defeating measure I. DeLong has been working inside deals.
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
The election will turn on neighborhood issues and manifest appreciation,
interest and understanding of,the institutional history of the district and City.

The import of such was brought into very sharp focus by recent events in
Copenhagen.Southern California will of course be a major contender for the
2020 Olympiad.Long Beach Marine Stadium, along with its other venues will
be central to that bid as we were in the bid for the Xth Olympiad as well as,
1968,1976,1884 United States Olympic Trials--all held in the Marine Stadium-
which has been under a two and a half year, unchecked assault,on Gary De Long's obtuse watch.

Jensen is correct in terms of the budget and pension issues.De Long has not produced.

Only a dim wit fails to understand we need to increase our tax base by
attracting new and retaining existing business. That is a given. Thus,De Long's
continued drum beat on that issue is really of little value.Extracting that from
the equation:he has been essentially AOL on the issues that matter most--
as set forth in the above paragraph. It is not just that, like Foster he is-oh
so disconnected. He,in my view clearly lacks the DNA to be an effective
    Councilperson.

As you are reflecting upon the issues---stroll down to 2ndStreet and
Glendora---note the large billboard looming over the street touting a
PORNO EXPO.However be careful: note earlier this week there was
yet another resident assaulted -brutally- after leaving a bar-whose name
is no stranger to the news.Apparently two strangers brutally beat him-
leaving him on the street with two bloody, black and blue eyes and broken
nose. Both apparently Hispanics. The cowards ran away.Police were able to
catch and arrest one.The other one,at last report was at large. This information was imparted to be by an individual that came upon the victim
a day or so after the attack at the pharmacy in Naples--by has not been
    reported in the press.

I could not help but laugh at Larry Goodhue....are you a frustrated old man? What in gods names does the 2020 Olympiad in Marine Stadium have to do with a city council election....get a clue fella that is 11 years away.

maybe you should go to a porno convention to relieve a littel stress.
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
The nexus Dan is as unmistaken as your lack of understanding relative to
the lead time involved in a City securing the rights to hold an Olympiad.

One does not just stumble out of a bar;wake up the next morning and
throw together a bid.Consider sir the following:The Games of the Xth
Olympiad (1932) were secured over this period:

1920:Representatives from Los Angeles County and City-athletic,civic,
and governmental organizations traveled to Antwerp(that is in Belgium-
Dan) to petition the International Olympic Committee for the rights to
    hosts the 1932 Olympic Games.

1923:Those same representatives traveled to Rome(that is in Italy- Dan)
where the petition was granted.Los Angles and Long Beach would host
    the Xth Olympiad Summer Games.

1931: A trilateral Agreement between the City of Long Beach;Parks and
Recreation Commission of the City of Long Beach and Xth Olympiade(sic)
of the Games of Los Angeles U.S.A. 1932,LTD A Corporation which spelled
out the responsibilities of each of the parties.

!920-1932.How many years is that Dan'l?
    That is the protocol.

As to the nexus between the 2020 bid and the Council election.Who would
be comfortable with the same individuals who were connected to the
    failed:
l.Home Depot fiasco-rebuked by a Superior Court Judge.
2.The dubious attempted fraud-vis a via the Parcel Tax.
3.The Wetlands Land(a classic pig in the poke)Swap.
4.PCH and 2NS Street-which long ago should have been underway-if
    not completed.

The District and the City need visionary forces such as we had in
the 1920-30's---and then again in 1968,1976,1984-when the United States
Olympic Trials were secured for Long Beach-and of course the 1984
Olympics. We do not have that now.We have but carpet baggers using
Long Beach as a Way Station on their way to,they would like to think,to
    Sacramento or Washington.

Both Foster and De Long have manifested no interest in what would be
central to Long Beach's bid for the 2020 games---as it was for the games
awarded to Rio.Point in fact their attitude transcends obtuseness, goes
beyond ignorance and is blatantly destructive.Upon reflection it would
appear they are just as ignorant as your post proves you to be.
  • Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding!
  • wrongbeachjohn
Absolutely outstanding too that you're not running.

Additionally, I like that INCO is giving money to your handler lurch; he has an inflated sense of worth and will soon be shown the door, with the donated money being not well-spent.
  • Mr. Wrong: Not considering myself sufficiently qualified, I wouldn't presume to run for elected public office. But it's nice to know you can always be counted on to offer wholly unwarranted and thoroughly ignorant insult.
  • Mike Ruehle
    lbresident,

I hope this answers a couple of your questions.
  • lbresident
It does. And I have a few more below.
  • Mike Ruehle
It's grass roots resident supporter Jensen against wetlands developer and dirty deal sponsor DeLong. Jensen wishes to improve Long Beach's future, while DeLong uses Long Beach as a future political stepping stone. Looks like its Time to break out the "SO LONG DELONG" website.
  • lbresident
    Great. This is exciting.

Mr. Jensen, I'd love to hear your stances on the following:

Do you support reconfiguring the breakwater?
Do you support increasing the employee contribution for pensions?
Given you opposed Measure I, do you feel fixing our roads, sidewalks, street medians, and other infrastructure is a top priority? If so, how will you accomplish it?
How do you feel about the city's involvement in affordable housing and other social service?

I look forward to your responses.
  • lbresident
Terry, I would also like your opinion on charter reform to increase the port transfer to tidelands. Is your bet with the Port or the residents who need the infrastrtucture in the tidelands upgraded in a big way yesterday.
  • Mike Ruehle
I'm in agreement with you here. If we residents are made to live with the water and AIR pollution created by the Port, then the Port needs to kick in a greater portion of their profits to the city to help offset the negative impacts the port is having on resident's quality of life and our property values.
