“IT’S ABOUT TIME THEY START BUILDING UP THE SIXTH DISTRICT”

Snoop Dogg, Super Bowl champ Willie McGinest give time and money to help pay for a Kroc Center. What’s next? Raising the last $17 million

The volume on the tape recorder had to be turned up all the way to catch some of what he was saying, but multimedia star Snoop Dogg and three-time NFL Super Bowl champ Willie McGinest had strong words for their native Long Beach Wednesday, in announcing more than $5 million in in-kind donations toward someday building a $140 million Kroc Center in central Long Beach.

“There’s more to Long Beach than downtown Long Beach,” Snoop said at one point–immaculate as usual in a dark denim vest, white-on-blue-striped oxford shirt and tie, his eyes hidden behind shades.

“A lot of people got the conception that Long Beach is based on what it looks like downtown. Because I go around the world and I travel and people say ‘I’ve been to Long Beach and it’s nice, its nice and it’s nice,’ and I’m like ‘Have you been to the part where I’m from?’ so they can understand that it’s not just based on downtown Long Beach.

“It’s about time they start building up the Sixth District, because some of the greatest people in Long Beach have come from the Sixth District.”

This example of a Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center–funded in part by a $76 million endowment from Joan Kroc’s restricted $1.5 billion gift to the Salvation Army–should accomplish just that.

(Does her name sound familiar? She’s the widow of McDonald’s restaurants founder Ray Kroc.)

A much-needed update of the 19-acre Hamilton Bowl/Chittick Field site immediately north of Pacific Coast Highway at Walnut Avenue, it will feature a world-class gym and sports complex; sports playing fields, an aquatics complex, play yards, walking trails, gardens–and even the possibility of areas to make art and to practice and perform music.

“You look at that, you can’t even imagine what’s there right now,” said McGinest, a 15-year National Football League star who is a free agent after having played for the New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns.

As he examined renderings of the facility, McGinest remembered playing baseball there–and the mini-dust storms that resulted from running the bases at Hamilton Bowl.

“You have Olympic facilities from this side–they look like a magical world or something compared to what’s there now,” McGinest said.

“When I saw the picture, I’m still in awe of stuff like this. I played sports so I understand how much this means just on the sports side of it. Whenever I wanted something like this, I would have to go outside Long Beach to find something like this.

“Now, this is the opportunity for guys like me, for the young athletes coming out, to keep them–to keep everybody–right here.”

Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews–whose involvement Snoop and McGinest praised as absolutely crucial to getting them involved–agreed.

“The Kroc Center is a place with hopes for all–and remember that word ‘all.’ But the most promising aspect of the central area is the crown jewel of Long Beach Poly High School,” Andrews said.

“Poly is one of the best athletics programs in the nation. There is no other high school where more young people are recruited into the professional athletics.

“Poly could utilize the Kroc Center for its home games. My call is for all Poly graduates to come home and help build this center. The first large step starts with one giant leap with the help of Snoop Dogg and Will McGinest, who are all alumni to Poly.”

McGinest has pledged his time to make the Kroc Center a reality; and Snoop, Andrews said, “has committed to a $5 million in-kind cash donation. Snoop has agreed to create a music single with others–just himself if necessary–to describe the experience in Long Beach and how the Kroc Center is a beacon of hope to young kids to stay out of trouble.

“This summer, it will be able to be downloaded, and all the proceeds will go to the Kroc Center. He has agreed to perform a concert to raise money and awareness for the Kroc Center.”

And that’s it, right? Not quite.

Even with Snoop and McGinest’s committments, fundraisers are still $17 million short of reaching their goal and triggering a $76 million endowment from Joan Kroc, Salvation Army Major Glen Madsen said during an interview in the unofficial green room at Ristorante daVinci–a lounge hidden behind a secret door disguised as a giant framed mirror.

Where exactly is the Kroc Center project?

“We’re just finishing up the Environmental Impact Report,” said Dave Neary, one of the powers behind Ristorante daVinci; he’s also chairman of the Long Beach Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Plans “are currently in plan check,” Neary continued, at the press conference. “We hope to have them out some time in July, and that being the case–and the EIR receiving its final approval–with any luck, we’ll break ground in August or September.”

“Well, I’ll tell you,” Madsen said afterwards. “The reality is, we still need to raise the last $17 million. Until we raise that, we can’t have a groundbreaking.”

“I’m just really telling you, this is going to bring people from all over to get behind this now,” Andrews said hopefully as the press conference neared its end–but remarks he’d made earlier sounded arguably closer to the reality.

“I ask everyone to ask themselves, ‘What can I do to help?’ ” Andrews had said as the afternoon began. “Dig deep into your pockets, concentrate on the idea to make this dream a reality.”

Yes, dig. Dig a little deeper, for just a little longer.

Howardx and all the rest, I'm pretty sure you misunderstood mr. Goodhue, he was referring to Dee Andrews, not Snoop Dogg. fo shizzle.
  • The Toad
Willie McGinest will, hopefully, bring a positive image and motivate people to contribute the requisite matching funds to make this very worthwhile project a reality. Let's not get so preoccupied with Snoop that we lose sight of Mr. McGinest's involvement.
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
Good thinking. There indeed will be some heavy lifting to do-very heavy.
  • The Toad
Theo--What happened to the first couple of day's comments about this story? I'm quite sure that at least a half dozen comments have "disappeared". Thanks.
  • Theo Douglas
Hi, Toad, good question--but I don't think this story had any comments until this morning, about three hours ago (give or take). You may be thinking of a piece I wrote Monday, in advance of this press conference; or of an exclusive I wrote last November, when Snoop and his wife came to town to help feed some folks less fortunate than themselves. Both those pieces--particularly the latter--had comments on them, and to the best of my knowledge, none of those comments were deleted.
  • The Toad
Hi, Theo. I assure you comments went up yesterday, Wednesday 6/10/09, almost as soon as this piece went up. I should know; I made one of them. I believe there were between six and nine comments that were "lost" overnight.
  • Theo Douglas
Hi again, Toad, looks like you were right about some comments disappearing: apparently a few comments did somehow get marked as spam by our spam filter--which obviously doesn't seem to have been doing its job. I'll talk to our web guys and see what we can do about getting those comments restored. Not sure where they are now--somewhere in the ether.
  • howardx
theo can you confirm for me that the kroc centers are a completely private operation? is there any public funding involved in the planned long beach center?
  • Theo Douglas
Hi, Toad, thanks for being more specific. I'll contact our web guys and see what they can tell me.
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
Was that not a different article on same subject..check you should find it and the comments there.
  • The Commish
How about just give the cash, Snoop - an "inkind cash" donation is an oxymoron, the donation isn't cash upfront - its the presumption of the success of the record and concert. Don't cash in on this yourself for career reasons, just do the right thing.
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
While certainly the current,oh so disconnected leadership of this once great City is
troublesome on so many levels, surely it is not so depraved that it would accept funding
from a felon, convicted of such offenses, who post conviction actions, behavior conduct-
manifested by his music render him a degenerate in most community of minds.

True there are even mothers(who surely have escaped the notice of child protective services)void of any self esteem or self respect,as well as some editorial boards that are
midst of a pronounced, prolonged, senior moment that fail to see the many down side of
sideling up to a felonious degenerate.

Accepting funding from such a source, direct or indirect would be tantamount to accepting funding from the Nazis, who.though certainly were the personification of bad
neighbors, did make their contributions to architecture, music and transportation.

From a very pragmatic standpoint,it would inherently intensify the propensity of shutting of revenue streams from sources that have enough self respect not to have
their name placed along side of a degenerate of the first order.

"Snoop Dogg = Hitler." Larry, you sir are a racist fool. Just STFU and stick to whining about that "historical" chain link fence around Marine Stadium--at least you're on semi-firm ground there.
  • Laurence Goodhue
Certainly those that beat their wifes or girlfriends would agree with you and the other
disturbed minds that embrace so fawn over and embrace Snoop Dog.

There is nothing racist about the opposition to Snoop Dog.My objection is based not on the color of skin, but on his manifest views toward women as codified in his
music so repugnant to so many-but apparently not to you-which is revealing.
  • howardx
which SPECIFIC snoop songs are you talking about laurence? i mean you have listened to them to form your opinion right? which albums did you use to do your research?
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
Though it is not my habit of buying garbage, copies of the referenced
material was supplied to me and will be played at City Council meetings
over a period of weeks, along with position papers of experts in social
behavior which go to the issue of how damaging such garbage is especially
in circumstances and less than stable environments in which to many of
the kids are faced with today.
  • The Toad
Mr. Goodhue-- please rethink your ideas about playing any of the referenced material at City Council meetings; it might well, and probably should, land you in jail. I totally agree with your condemnation of the garbage lyrics. However; you and I both know that the mayor will not tolerate that level of vulgarity in the council chambers, nor should he. I go back to the old axiom: "Two wrongs do not make one right". My suggestion is for you to give written copies of the lyrics to everyone (including the City Clerk, the City Manager and the City Attorney) behind the rail; transcribe them if you have to. You might also bring extra copies for the press and the audience. Otherwise your point will be lost in the pissing contest between you and the mayor. I am on your side.
  • Laurenece B. Goodhue
Thanks for your thoughts-way a head of you...my plan was and
is to ask the Mayor's permission to play the material and so
advising him and the audience that most decent and thoughtfull
minds will find the material repulsive....if he demurs my plan is
to point out the the material is indeed so objectionable that it
may not be played or even read...THUS...will ask the Council how
can it accept support from one with such a diseased, degenerate
mind...reminding them that the objectionable was a post conviction products(s).
  • howardx
make sure you also mention your belief that the nazis "did make their contributions to architecture, music and transportation."

the only diseased mind here is yours goodhue.
  • howardx
so you havent listened to them yourself then? you have formed an opinion as to what they contain without hearing them yourself?
  • Laurence B. Goodhue
So you did not read my posts very carefully did you?
  • howardx
i read them as closely as i could stand to, im just asking you to verify that you arent basing your judgement of snoops music on any actual listening, just what you heard somewhere.
  • suburban robot
    hear howardx, i'll help you:

"bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks"

"rollin' down tha street smokin' indo, sippin' on gin and juice"

    "... it's 187 on a mutherfuckin' cop..."

those are just a few ghetto lines from a couple songs.

excellent role model for the little hood monkeys about town. poor kids have no chance anyway. that is why i say "who cares". in the long run, only a handful of the ghettoites of LB have a chance at existing above the poverty line.
  • howardx
    enjoy your stay
  • High Hat
Typical "don't confuse me with the facts" wingnut kneejerk response. Larry is very quick to jump to conclusions and thereby make BAD judgement calls. Remember, Larry was instrumental in getting Gary DeLong elected by launching a coordinated nasty smear against his opponent Sephanie Lofton that was nothing but a pack of lies. Now he rants against Gary DeLong. But this huge error has taught Larry NOTHING.

As I said, Larry--stick to the "historical" fence around Marine Stadium and continue your rants against sex in public restrooms where you are on much firmer ground!
