Familiar Trees + oto
In case you don’t know, there are some really, really good bands in Long Beach. I’d be lying if I said I were particularly familiar with headliner Familiar Trees (though I like what I’ve heard). But if I have to choose a fave among the LBC bands I do know, oto is it. Whether incarnated as soto, oto, or Elephant Day, these soft-spoken Japanese 20-somethings use some unconventional techniques and instruments (harmonium, xylophone, a rattling box) to produce breezy, ethereal music that is somehow both adorably playful and arrestingly beautiful. It’s a perfect match for the intimate space that is {open}.
