CINNAMON CINDERS
We are very fortunate to have Ms. Diana Bosetti taking the extra effort and making the personal sacrifice to follow this through [Dave Wielenga’s “No Cinnamon Roll Left Behind,” Oct. 1]. Is there no punishment for misappropriating the funds beyond paying them back? If not, it will only continue. Who is auditing the Long Beach Unified School District? This misappropriation of state funds is just the type of thing we pay them to find! Excellent article, Mr. Wielenga! I’ve only been reading The District for a few weeks but I am impressed by the compelling, thorough, and unfiltered reporting here. I’m spreading the word!

EDITOR’S NOTE Actually, we could have used a better filter on one pretty important element of the story—the amount of the misappropriation of federal and state funds for poor children at Los Cerritos Elementary in school years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. It was $87,722. LBUSD had already repaid $31,988.83. On Sept. 15 the California Board of Education sided with Diana Bosetti and ruled that LBUSD owes $55,733.17 more.
SHORE HAD US SOME FUN!
University by the Sea is such a cool idea [Theo Douglas’ “You Can’t be All Breakwater All the Time,” Oct. 1]. Nice to see a positive event that can entertain, inform and imbibe. My wife and I moved to Belmont Heights from Redondo Beach this summer, and we really dig this place!

KEEP IT REAL, FOURTH STREET!
You really hit the nail on the head when mentioning how Fourth Street has evolved without the help of the Redevelopment Agency—or the city in general [Theo Douglas’ “How to Build a Fourth Street,” Sept. 24]. I remember sitting in meetings with the Visioning Committee for downtown, trying to explain organic movements and citing Fourth Street as a local example, only to have it fall on deaf ears. It’s amazing how areas can grow, prosper and create their own identity in a natural fashion. You just have to look at downtown as a case study on how not to develop: by forcing fake demand and trying too hard. Keep it real, Fourth Street. Don’t let the city suits with their neat-o ideas show up now to fuck it all up for you.

THANK YOU, BLAIR,
MAY I PLEASE HAVE ANOTHER?
Blair Cohn is not only a fighter; he is a very good writer [“Three Minutes at a Time,” Sept. 17]. I was recently beaten up, knocked down and thrown out of the ring. Reading Mr. Cohn has given me the inspiration to get back in the fight and kick some ass. Thank you, Blair. I needed a good slap in the face.

STIR IT UP
It’s one thing to challenge the status quo, but Mike Ruehle seems to love stirring things up, just for his own amusement [Dave Wielenga’s “The Ruehleing Class,” Sept. 17]. I’ve lived in Belmont Shore for 39 years, and everyone has always gotten along. Before you blindly follow his charge, why not get to know some of the people he is denigrating. I have frequented many of the businesses and have found that the owners really care about the community. Come on, Mike, grow up and get a life. Let Belmont Shore return to being the happy community it was before you started playing your silly games.
