VEGEHYSTERIANS
I can’t believe something so calm, peaceful and sometimes cathartic as gardening can be ruined by an evil, stressed-out, authoritative set of people [Megan Brescini’s “War on Terra,” Aug. 20]. I have driven by the Long Beach Community Gardens and thought of its beauty and serenity, the wonder of a garden and its bounty. No more. These people need to get a life; it’s just vegetables.

MAD ABOUT MEXICO
Each time I read yet another story highlighting the despicable actions of resource-rich Mexico against its own people, I get more furious [Anonymous’ “The Accidental Immigrant,” Aug. 13]. The refugees from this inhumane nation cannot help but have a difficult time in America as illegals. Tragically, it is our citizen children who are paying the price in California. There is nothing commendable about enticing the illegals to settle in our state when it has such a devastating effect on public education, health care and destroys our children’s expectation of a shot at the American Dream. We all own the shame and disgrace that is driving one failure after another in the heavily tarnished Golden State.

NO-ACCOUNT COUNCIL
Why would the city council move to hold “lobbyists” accountable [Dave Wielenga’s “I Can’t Help It. I’m a Lobbyist!” Aug. 13] when the citizens of Long Beach don’t hold the elected officials who have failed us all so miserably accountable? We are truly pathetic.

LIBRARY CARD
We don’t require our Main Library adjacent to City Hall because this is the same Long Beach City Hall that cannot read the times. To whit: Get a boat that won’t float (the Queen Mary), a plane that won’t fly (the Spruce Goose), rip out Acres of Books to build condos and, oh, while you’re at it, tear down our Main Library for our 90 percent of downtown people for whom transportation is inaccessible to other city library branches. Our mayor, city manager and city council are feckless, fickle and quite clearly long in the tooth. Moronic.

THE BUNGALOWDOWN
The Brown’s Court Apartments on Colorado Street in Long Beach are a great example of Bungalow Court Architecture [Theo Douglas’ “Theme and Variations,” July 30]. You can learn more about this property at the following website: BrownsCourtApartments.com. The property owners are working with the city of Long Beach to get their property designated with Historic Landmark status. If you are interested in signing a petition supporting this designation, please send e-mail correspondence to tracymyersarchitect@gmail.com.

KEEP RINGIN’ THAT REBELLION!
Jennifer Stockdale, this was an excellent latest issue in your continuing coverage of the breakwater rebellion [“Take One! It’s Free!” July 23]. Continue to discover and publish identities of the opposition, and their reasons, their loyalties, their employers, and their benefactors. People want to play in the surf. Long Beach has an ocean attached to it. Kind of. Why is this an uphill battle?

NOT JUST A NAME, A NUMBER
As a frequent online “commenter” on the articles in your fine magazine, I’ve noticed that you’ve changed the format. I miss being able to see the number of comments for each article. Besides indicating the amount of interest the article has generated, the comment count also helps people determine if there have been any comments since the last posting. I’m hoping to see this return.
