Peñasol Sangría

What’s better than a sweet, icy beverage when it’s hot—especially with a healthy splash of alcohol? It just makes the day nicer. And you’d be wise to take a cue from Spain and Portugal, where sangría is a summer staple because when it comes to alcohol, frankly, they know what’s best. Sangría, derived from sangre, means blood wine, which sounds really Goth but in actuality is light, fruity and decidedly unsinister. But if it’s 80 degrees out, and you’re feeling too hot and lethargic to mix a bunch of ingredients together to make this Spanish treat, then just pour a glass of Peñasol Sangría, or Lazy Man’s Sangría. Peñasol Sangría is a delicious pre-made sangría imported from Spain that comes in a fat green bottle. This version by Felix Solis Bodegas is made with red wine and citrus accents, yielding a sweet, rich flavor. Pour a glass of Peñasol in a big wine glass, though any hi-ball or tumbler will do. Cut up a few apple, peach or orange slices, grab a couple ice cubes and throw those bad boys in there. Easy. Down the hatch. If you’re really lazy, nix the fruit wedges and just throw in the ice. You could also serve this in a punch bowl at an impromptu barbecue. Just be sure to stash the evidence of your pre-bottled shame. When everyone asks how you made such delicious sangría, raise your glass and tell them your grandma gave the recipe to you; it’s an ancient Spanish secret, this family blood wine. Then you’ll seem exotic and drunk.
