Providing a compact and easy way to achieve the perfect smoky eye, the Tarte Peep Show palette is more than just makeup: It’s a makeover in a box. A very cute, slender, purple, fishnet-adorned box. Unlatch the flip-open lid (which conveniently sports a wide mirror inside) and you’re greeted by four eyeshadow pans, including a creamy primer. Below them, a discreet drawer houses two double-ended brushes and an eyeliner pencil. Head for the primer first: It goes on smoothly, and will keep your shadow in place for hours. Next, one of the three shadow shades—shimmery white, muted silver or charcoal—which can be easily layered (although, for some, the silver tone may be a bit too sheer). And lastly, the key to achieving a smoky eye, the eyeliner pencil: It’s easy to work with, the included double-ended eyeliner brush a big help in nailing that perfect line. Sounds complex? As an added bonus, there are smoky eye instructions included on the box for beginners. The only drawback is there’s no mascara included in the set. Considering the otherwise convenient set-up, a miniature version of Tarte’s Lights, Cameras, Lashes mascara would have been nice here. $37.
