WANNA MAKE $30,043.50 ON A $200 BET?
GET ELECTED TO THE LONG BEACH CITY COUNCIL!
Four seats are open — the even-numbered ones: districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 — on the nine-member panel that calls the shots in Big Town. If you’re feeling lucky and popular or internally driven by a desire for power and/or public service (be sure it’s not just gas), you’ve got until Friday (January 11) at 4:30 p.m. to get to City Hall and plunk down the $200 filing fee that will get your name on the ballot for the April 8 primary.
Each council job pays $30,043.50 a year–exactly 25 percent of Mayor Bob Foster’s annual salary of $120,174. Multiply that times a four-year term, factor in annual raises based on the Consumer Price Index and a variety of perks and it’s a tidy little haul – well, until you divide it by the uncountable hours required of a good council member. Then again, nobody says you have to be one of those.
