FROM LBREPORT.COM: SCHIPSKE’S UNPRECEDENTED PROPOSAL WOULD HARNESS PORT’S ECONOMIC ENGINE FOR TRUE PUBLIC BENEFIT

Bill Pearl of LBReport.com breaks the news of a ballot proposal by Council member Gerrie Schipske – agendized for the Jan 22 council meeting — that would revolutionize the financial relationship between the City of Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach.

Citizens have had to bear ever-worsening health and quality-of-life consequences of the Port — which spews deadly air and water pollution, along with stifling traffic – and Schipske’s proposals would give them a greater share of the immense profits the Port generates. Significantly, it would permit the City to use the money throughout town.

Finally, a councilmember takes on an appropriate task. Why shouldn't port revenues be allowed to help with city finances? They're part of the Long Beach community. Also, they have a healthy reserve fund. I believe, the ports contribution to the city is far below what it should be. I suggest, all Long Beach city councilmembers should support Gerrie Shipske's proposal.

I suggest, that Juan, learn the proper, use, of commas.

I suggest that people who post anonomous comments are smucks. It is my opinion that their comments are frivilous and without merit.

I tend to feel like you, Dwight, unless people have a very good reason -- usually, something to do with job security or retribution -- for keeping their identities anonymous.

And dummies like me that can not spell anonymous correctly should not be taken seriously.
