TO HELL WITH THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN
I’m serious. I don’t care about the Hollywood sign and neither should you. If rich extortionists want to try to milk a cool $22 million from LA, let them develop. Actually, this is more than extortion, this is kidnapping. They have kidnapped the virgin chaparral around the sign and now they want a 22 million ransom or else it gets developed. Fuck it, let them. You don’t pay ransoms because it starts trends, because it only encourages more kidnappings, right? Why should this be any different?
But I’ve appreciated the Hollywood sign, when the air is clear enough you can see it from my girlfriend’s old house. I like knowing it’s there, but above all it’s Southern California’s ideal forum for mass vandalism. But if it costs that much to keep it clean, who cares? How many tourists are going to cancel their LA summer vacation because the sign has houses around it?
LA city government and LA residents should be ashamed of themselves for getting this worked up about it. All of their righteous indignation and money that’s been gathering up should have both been spent a year and half ago. Back then, the South Central Farm was threatened and eventually destroyed (via warehouse transformation) thanks to a souless scumface extortionist of a property owner who wanted $16 million for the farm. The city pleaded poverty and private citizens failed to act. That was eight million less for property that had benefits for the city, other than looking nice.
