PSYCHEDELIC OWL BEER
This week’s LA Times food section turns Japanese and runs a roundup of some of the best Japanese craft beers, namely those of the criminally under-consumed Hitachino brand.
Virtually all of Hitachino’s beers are great (even the ginger beer), but the red rice beer–brewed from the same smooth stuff as sake–is particularly good. Hitachino’s beers should be easy to spot, too, since they all sport the same pseudo-psychedelic owl logo.
Only problem is that Hitachino’s national distributor is across the country in New Jersey, which makes it sometimes painfully hard to find out here. Thankfully, Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach serves a few varieties, and you can buy bottles at The Wine Country in Signal Hill and any Bev Mo.
