PROP. 8 VOTER BREAKDOWN BY CITY

The LA Times ran the numbers from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s website breaking down how each of LA County’s cities voted on Prop. 8. From just a cursory look at the digits, if you’re gay you might want to steer clear of places such as Compton, which voted 65 percent “yes,” Cerritos (66 percent) and Artesia which nearly hit 68 percent. You might also watch yourself, regrettably, in my hometown of Downey which went about 64 percent “yes.” As far as gay-friendly locales, you might think about driving up the 405 to lovely, tiny and, apparently flaming, Hermosa Beach which voted 70 percent “no.” Still, one of the most interesting numbers was posted by our own Long Beach which, along with West Hollywood and Santa Monica, is one of the most identifiable gay havens in Southern California. That being said, Long Beach voted a relatively low 52.5 against Prop. 8. That’s a majority, but a slim one. West Hollywood, for example, voted 86 percent “no.” Too small a sample? OK, Santa Monica came in at 77.6 negatory. Still not big enough? Well, check out mama L.A. which voted 57.5, “no.” Hmmmmm. Someone want to explain this to us?

I've heard of many Long Beach queers retiring to desert rocking chairs in Palm Springs. And a few younger ones who've outgrown LB and moved out. May help to explain the slim victory margin.

I'm disappointed in California as a whole.

I've always thought there was a "bad element" in Long Beach that longed to be more like Orange County. I blame those douchebags for weakening our meager affirmation of civil rights.

You can always move to Massachussetts or Conneticut.
