OUR BICYCLING PHOTOGRAPHER
The camera turns on Russ Roca
Many of the fine, fine fotos in The District Weekly are the work of Russ Roca, the only photographer we know who bicycles to work. He’s something of a curiosity around Long Beach, and increasingly the subject of reporters inspired by his commitment to human-powered transit. “I have a brother in Iraq and I feel guilty about using too much oil,” Russ told Whole Life Times. Russ has also appeared in Environmental Defense (where he revealed his family’s reaction to his carless lifestyle) and in greendaily. We’re partial to his work on our very own thedistrictweekly.com, and especially “Fear and Loading,” his collaboration with Rachel Powers available on our homepage: the two drove around the Port of Long Beach and produced this very beautiful–and, sure, unsettling–analysis of port security.
You can learn more about our friend–and your local hero–Russ from his blog.
