OH, BROTHER: JORDIN SPARKS, ELIZABETH HASSELBECK, SLUTS

I was too busy not watching Mad Men to not watch the MTV VMAs last night, so I missed this footage of American Idol winner Jordin Sparks—evidently a response to a joke made by host Russell Brand earlier in the evening and not just woefully random and preachy—declaring “It’s not bad to wear promise rings—because not every guy or girl wants to be a slut.”

As the girls at Jezebel point out (and countless boys, girls, men and women know and understand) the problem with this statement isn’t just that it’s fundamentally silly (abstinence education does not prevent teens from having sex), it’s that the message it sends (sex = slutty slutty slutty!!!*) can be traumatic to young women who decide to have sex.

Having sex doesn’t make you a slut. Duh. Just like wearing tight jeans does not mean you want to have sex.

So, in short, my rage deepens for Elizabeth Hasselbeck and her Go Girl! championing of this poor, misspoken starlet. (Dear girls: That boy/girl calling you a slut? They’re courageous! Like John McCain! Last link very NSFW!)

LOL @ Behar, though: “If it’s boring, then you’re not a slut.”

*To be read in the voice of Michael Kors.
