FEAST ON MY HEART: PYLON CONQUERS PTP FEST

Half of yesterday’s Part Time Punks Fest escaped me (traffic, lunch), but that still left enough post-punk to fill out a fine retrospective. The Urinals went classic (“Ack Ack Ack Ack” still clocked in at about one minute), Vivian Girls went tasteless (“Hey, have you guys heard of a place called the OC? I guess it’s on fire right now. It’s a bummer people are dying, but it’s kinda beautiful”). But Pylon plowed through them all. The band has aged plenty (Vanessa was wrapped in a leopard-print dress like the coolest mom on Halloween while the other members promoted their own Pylon t-shirts), but they haven’t strayed from a single old note. They ripped through every angle of their catalog (almost every second of Gyrate was covered) like a band born yesterday. Meanwhile, A Certain Ratio played only a few old tunes before slipping into their new Depeche Mode. I didn’t even give them a chance to play “Shack Up.”
