CHECK OUT CAMBODIAN PINPEAT COMPOSITIONS AT KOO’S TONIGHT

Daring aesthete Sander Wolff—Ain Soph Aur improvateur as well as storied Soundwalk veteran and all-round horizon-sound dedicant—presents into Koo’s a rare and compelling set of microtonal classic compositions including a set of Cambodian pinpeat, the ancient music of the Angkor temples which predates the comparatively more restrictive intervals of formalized Western composition. As dear to pinpeat tradition, musicians performing on traditional instruments like the roneat (a hardwood xylophone-like instrument with specific pitch determined by wax weights) and the sralai (a wind instrument designed for lengthy melodies uninterrupted by pauses for breath) appear in relief on the walls of Angkor Wat. Tonight’s set will be performed by Master Ho Chan, whose classical training had to be hidden for years until the Khmer Rouge were pushed out of power. Accompanying will be a selection of work by John Cage and Harry Partch contemporary Lou Harrison, whose famously Asian-influenced works will be performed by noted guitarist and KPFK host John Schneider, as well a set by Wolff.
