In an important embrace of these digital times, the ever-excellent LIFE magazine has partnered with Google to digitize its photo archives, which somehow stretch all the way back to the 1750s. Of all the Southern California shots, LA logically gets the best, but Long Beach is well represented, too. There are iconic photos of the Pike (above) as well as some ubiquitous snaps of the oil industry up on Signal Hill. You can find the archive in its entirety here.

  • So amazing for Life and Google to make the photos available. The first thing i did was to search for photos of Long Beach. Quite indeed a capsule in time.

    That picture shows the Bisbey's Airship to the right. Aviation was just taking off in the US and anything related to flying was the rage.
