Staff Infection

I WENT TO STARBUCKS ONCE

Or twice, I don’t remember exactly. But I’m not proud of it, believing as I do that there are certain businesses – record shops, flower shops, running-shoe stores, breakfast spots and coffee houses — that just ought to be indie operations. But a story in Slate presents evidence that the proliferation of Starbucks (15,000 stores and expanding at the rate of six per day) has actually stimulated the growth of neighborhood coffee houses.   Unlikely as that sounds, there is pretty good local proof of this in Belmont Shore, where Polly’s Coffee has thrived since two Starbucks stores — and a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf — invaded Second Street. I wrote about Polly’s situation nine years ago when I was working for OC Weekly, and owner Mike Sheldrake recently told me that business continues to get better and better than ever.  On the other hand, $4 for a cup of coffee — should anybody really be happy about this?

Hey everyone - seen this site yet? http://delocator.net/ If you ever doubted there was a non-Starbucks (or Barnes and Noble, etc.) option in your neighborhood... Awesome :)

Hey, the best Starbucks you can go to is in the domestic terminal of the Santiago airport. You'll notice that they never serve (or make) coffee, because the machine has been broken since the Starbucks stand opened and apparently no one will ever fix it. Sometimes you can still get an espresso, but even that is sometimes not available. I highly recommend them, especially if you don't like Starbuck's coffee.

After all these years, I still don't know the nomenclature -- and I take that as a positive sign.

I went about a month ago for the first time in many, many moons out of necessity--don't ask--the coffee guy asked what I wanted, "a medium coffee with steamed milk" "Huh?" "A MEDIUM COFFEE with STEAMED MILK" "Do you want a....(insert made up sizes here)?" It went down hill from there. If I'm paying that much to a chain give me ItsAGrind, at least they understand "medium" and "coffee".
