SIXTH DISTRICT CITY COUNCIL RACE GETS INTRIGUING
There’s a bit of a twist in the only real Long Beach City Council race in the city, the Sixth District contest between incumbent Dee Andrews and challenger Ahmed Saafir.
Paul Eakins reports in this morning’s Press-Telegram that Andrews skipped last night’s NAACP candidates forum for school board and Sixth District candidates because of what Andrews described in a press release as “smear tactics” against him.
Eakins, who wrote that he wasn’t able to reach Andrews or his chief of staff John Edmond by phone last night, estimates that Andrews may be referring to the website EyeonCorruption.com, which in a “story” dated this month refers back to his substance problems in the 1980s.
I’m using quotes because I believe this is what’s known in the trade as a hit piece–and not a very good one. It runs under the headline “DEE ANDREWS, CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 6 CANDIDATE THOUGHT VOTERS WOULD FORGET ABOUT HIS CRIMINAL PAST…HE THOUGHT WRONG.”
Which should make you wonder, didn’t voters already give Andrews a second chance when they elected him the first time last spring? Yes. They did.
Another admitted erratum: the site hosts a “photo” of recent 55th Assembly District candidate Charlotte “Sadiyah” Gibson, a Long Beach nurse who ran unsuccessfully last year against Warren Furutani–with the words “not actual photo” emblazoned across it.
How hard is it to get an actual photo of someone you want to smear? Must be pretty hard.
Saafir, Andrews’ opponent, denied any involvement in the website.
Eakins was able to trace the website as far as something called Domains by Proxy, which lets you register a web domain without letting people know who you are.
And there’s also this: a phone number for someone named Ms. McClure, on the back of an anti-Andrews flyer pdf-ed on the website. Who is Ms. McClure? I’ll let you know more when I do.
