CITY COUNCIL EXAMINES NEW SEX OFFENDER ORDINANCE TOMORROW

Remember the debate over our current sex offender ordinance, and how it became so controversial that–while Long Beach City Council passed it earlier this year–it was never enforced?

(And also how an Orange County attorney recently filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of several Long Beach-area registered sex offenders?)

Well, it seems the whole situation could go away at tomorrow night’s Long Beach City Council meeting.

As the Press-Telegram’s Paul Eakins reports, the council is set to consider a new, potentially less controversial ordinance that, among other things, would not apply to current registered sex offenders–only to future registered sex offenders, i.e. those convicted after the ordinance goes into effect.

The attorney for the registered sex offenders, Sarah Stockwell of Fountain Valley, says she can dig it.

“It protects all of our clients,” Stockwell told the P-T. “Now it’s just negotiating how we end the lawsuit.”

We’ll see what the council thinks tomorrow night.
