DAVE ALVIN WEDNESDAY AT FINGERPRINTS

Following up on its recent Rivers Cuomo show, Fingerprints will host Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Dave Alvin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

If you don’t know Alvin and his older brother Phil and their band, The Blasters, where do we start?

The Blasters and a host of other bands–among them the Rockats, the Paladins, the Billy Zoom Band, the Red Devils, and James Intveld & The Rockin’ Shadows–helped spark the late-’70s rockabilly revival in L.A., and the roots music revival that included everyone from Los Lobos to X to the Gun Club.

Dave Alvin was the band’s songwriter–and a former Cal State Long Beach student and, rather briefly, a fry cook here in Long Beach–and after leaving The Blasters in August 1986, he went solo, eventually winning a Grammy for his 2000 CD Public Domain.

The Blasters lives, still fronted by Alvin’s brother Phil, and featuring original bassist John Bazz.

And Alvin–whose Grammy-winning CD was comprised of traditional songs now in the public domain–has ascended, through talent and hard, hard work, to the pantheon of great American songwriters whom he himself still periodically covers.

If you wanna see him in an intimate in-store setting, you have to buy one of his records today to get yourself on the list–or just call Fingerprints tomorrow and they’ll add you to the list. (They tell us space is, as ever, limited.)
