MAYOR FOSTER DECLINES OFFER FROM LB PRESS CLUB TO PUBLICLY DEBATE MEASURE I

Mayor Bob Foster’s extensive and ongoing tour of the city in search of voter support for Measure I—the $571-million parcel property tax measure he proposed in late July—will not include a public debate offered by the Long Beach Press Club.

Foster has declined an invitation to pro-and-con it with Terry Jensen, a former Redevelopment Agency board member who opposes Measure I, at the Long Beach Press Club’s Oct. 17 meeting. He will continue presenting Measure I to community groups around the city, which he has been doing for more than two months.

Jensen will still appear at the Long Beach Press Club meeting to present his argument against approval of Measure I and accept a press conference-style session of questions, answers and followups from reporters as well as members of the public. Paul Eakins of the Press-Telegram, Bill Pearl of LBreport.com and Dave Wielenga of The District Weekly (that’s me) will be panelist/moderators.

The invitation to Mayor Foster remains open.

(Full disclosure: I presented the Long Beach Press Club’s debate invitation to Foster, through his chief aide.)

Measure I goes before the voters on Nov. 4. It is presented as a way to fund repair and improve the city’s infrastructure.

The meeting of the Long Beach Press Club, which will be open to the public, is Friday, October 17 on the rooftop patio of Smooth’s Sports Grille, located at 144 S. Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Jensen’s short presentation will begin at 8 p.m.

The Long Beach Press Club is a professional and social organization open to journalists who live or work in the Greater Long Beach Area. The group meets monthly.

Great post Jim. I feel the same way about his ridiculous measure. For me the best word to describe it is irresponsible, which you mentioned as well. With how shitty the situation is both on a macro and micro level it's crazy to think that our mayor is spending our money to chase around his ill-timed measure.

Perhaps if they would spend as much energy trying to figure out a better way to run the city we would all be better off. Redirect the energy into overcoming our reputation for being a second class city by the sea. Make the city attractive to outside interest and the money will come.

Stop trying to pass the buck Bob. Stop being part of the problem and look for a better solution.

Uh, and also, please excuse the extra words in my last post. This isn't what they teach you at Long Beach City College--I'm still on my first cup of coffee.
    Don't forget to vote.

Whoever is posting under Jim Hankla's name, please stop. It's cowardly and unfair.
