Drifting—the art of sidling, of driving sideways as fast as you can—might seem too subtle for your fans of Toby Keith, America and the Left Turn Club. But here it is again, for the second or third or fourth year in a row, following the main event Sunday: a tire-smoking contest between as determined a line-up of clutch- and gumball-burners as you’re likely to find anywhere. Unless you know where to look. Difference is, this contest is legal; there’s beer, planes towing advertisements overhead—and the year Lasorda was marshal, a woman showed him where babies feed. He’s some kind of a magnet for that stuff.
