DAMIEN DEMPSEY “TO HELL OR BARBADOS” UNITED OPPORTUNITY
“Damien is an Irish singer/songwriter, and this is his third album. I heard his other albums and I wasn’t all that impressed. His last one, Seize the Day, doesn’t even sell well. But I picked this up when we got it in the store, and I can’t get enough of it. It’s so good! The sticker on the cover says, ‘Dublin’s finest combines reggae, rock, folk, and electronica to create his most accomplished album to date.’ He has that very cool Irish singer/songwriter vibe that makes everything about Ireland seem really sad and depressing. The title track is, like, seven-and-a-half minutes long and so hooky and sad—it’s just really haunting and very Irish. It’s mostly acoustic. Like the Young Dubliners, but very mellow. The album’s title refers to Oliver Cromwell’s campaign against Ireland in the 1600s, when the Irish were deported to Barbados for slave labor. It’s only been out a week, but the copies we get in sell fast. I’m so glad you’re promoting this album!” // DAVE POSTAL
