With Kim on drums and Matt on two electric keyboards (on a setting best described as “baseball stadium organ”) this New York-based duo engaged a crowd in the most physical indie-pop mosh pit I’ve ever encountered. Following at least three less-than-well-matched openers, Matt announced the show was the first time he’d “been drinking on a month-long substance-free tour.” Unfortunately, tonight there would be no time for drunken faux pas: he and Kim sped through barely a total of five songs, including the totally awesome (and popular, thanks to the Internet) “Silver Tiles,” before the Long Beach Police Department (amazingly) politely asked the band to stop playing. Even more amazingly, everyone filed out—muttering about not getting to hear the band’s anthemic “Yea Yeah”—while Matt delivered an epic speech to the disappointed crowd; I even overheard a drunk kid calling him “Braveheart” on the way out.
