VECTOR CONTROL: MOVEON.ORG AGAINST THE WAR
FEATURE
Not content with beachfront living, some residents of the Alamitos Peninsula have made their homes beach front-ier. According to a city-funded survey 31 of them have extended their yards and patios past their property lines and onto the beach in violation of the Coastal Act. What have city officials done with this information? Nothing.
NEWS
The Shoreline Gateway project is slated to become Long Beach’s tallest building. Surprisingly, most of the concern about the project has little to do with the building and more to do with the cars going in and out of it. Especially since the building will have one one entrance and exit—and it’ll be located on the shortest street in town. Heather Reger reports. Plus, the cost of war in Vector Control, more on the Breakwater, and Criminy!
ART
Need more toy shows? Theo Douglas uncovers DDR Projects, a new Long Beach art gallery, whose cool first show is variations on a toy elephant, all made out of priceless ivory. Wait—strike that last part. They’re vinyl. Vinyl is the new ivory. And Arrissia Owen Turner checks in with former Long Beach poet/singer Derrick Brown, who “felt a little funny” one night a few weeks back and wound up in the hospital.
DEPT OF COMMERCE
Ellen Griley tells a tale of two stores, Olives, Too! and Kitchen Outfitters. Whether you are a budding chef or an experienced pro, the ending is delicious. Then, in Buy Curious, Griley prepares for the worst with a new line of First Aid and Emergency kits from Nalgene, the people who brought you that water bottle you never use.
FOOD + DRINK
Miles Clements checks out Dean’s Pizza and Thai, where the marriage of two cuisines (Italian and Thai, duh) is quite tasty. Plus, Chris Ziegler gets his full share of vitamins with Viento y Aqua’s Peanut Butter Banana Oat Smoothie. And don’t forget Blottery and Help!
MUSIC
Chris Ziegler gets the unknown gunmen stories from Coaxial and talks to rapper P.O.S. about his X-ray collection while he’s waiting to play on Warped Tour, and then catches Ruthann Friedman as she’s convinced to play “Windy” one more time. Then Jenni Tarma reviews Deadly Syndrome and Sarah Bennett trawls Tinariwen into Shop Ass!
FILM
It’s a new week, and for your reading pleasure, we present reviews of Resurrecting the Champ, The Nanny Diaries, and 2 Days in Paris.
FINE PRINT
One day Katy Davidson woke up to find she had fleas in her house. That didn’t make any sense since she doesn’t have any pets. Turns out you don’t have to have pets to have fleas. Thank heaven Jesus was there to get rid of them.
