DRINK OF THE WEEK: LACEY’S CARROT CAKE MARTINI

Located at the pinky toe of the 710 Freeway, the Daily Grill is just this side of an impossible journey—if you pass Pine when traveling west on Ocean, you might as well just continue on to San Pedro. But it’s worth a stop. Overlooking a fountain (and also the ground floors of the World Trade Center buildings) the Daily Grill bar is the very definition of business casual: clean, quiet and subtly classy, with lots of wood and moderately expensive drinks—plus some Sam Adams thrown on tap for your more relaxed moneymakers. It’s nice—a good place to take your out-of-towner in-laws, maybe, or, better, to treat yourself to a rich happy hour cocktail: the carrot cake martini. Created by much-loved bartender Lacey, the drink is one of the best gifts you can buy this holiday season—a pretty, cinnamon-rimmed martini glass filled with a very shaken, ice cold mixture of Goldschläger, butterscotch schnapps, and a heavy helping of whipped cream. Words like “sinful” and “decadent” immediately come to mind, but that’s only the whipped cream talking—the rest of the drink is straight out of a sorority house liquor cabinet, kind of like a clandestine little rager in your mouth. Business on the outside; party on the inside—it’s the secret to your success.
