BUY CURIOUS: GREEN COFFINS

If flexing your tree-hugger cred while you’re alive just isn’t enough, go granola post-mortem with a purchase you can’t make twice: your coffin.

A safely biodegradable, 100 percent recycled paper coffin, the Ecopod is a radical, “green guilt”-free alternative to conventional chipboard and laminate caskets that leak toxins into groundwater and soil. Inventor Hazel Selina describes her progressive product as “a cross between a sarcophagus and a seed pod,” a human cocoon for your journey into the unknown. The British natural birth advocate created the Ecopod in response to environmentally unfriendly funeral practices—overcrowding burials, air-contaminating cremation, formaldehyde-laden embalming fluid, etc.

Selina’s CO2-neutral Ecopod is handmade in Brighton, England, and is available in more colors than an iPod shuffle—indigo blue, Indian red, forest green, white, silver leaf, and gold leaf. Three silk-screen designs are also available: doves, an Aztec sun and a Celtic cross. A premium gold-leaf-gilded coffin-pod lined with real feathers is also available, too. Weighing only 30 pounds, the Ecopod is light yet sturdy—your pallbearers would thank you if they could. Oh, and if you’re planning to burn, baby, burn, check out Ecopod’s morbidly adorable (morbidorable?) ARKA acorn urn in moss green or mahogany recycled paper. £769 (US $1,559) to £975 (US $1,977).
