ROMNEY TO SPEAK ABOUT HIS ANGRY GOD
Can a Mormon who believes in magic glasses and golden tablets win the White House?
What’s the prpper role of religion in the White House? The Founding Fathers believed it had no role. But times have changed, and Thursday Mitt Romney will explain how his Mormon faith is a very good thing for America. Pundits say the Republican candidate’s speech will be just like Jack Kennedy’s Catholic apologetics; none that I can find points out this critical difference: Kennedy spoke at a time of rising American expectations, and Romney is speaking to an America that has given up—pissed away its budget surplus, shredded its Constitution, squandered the rare post-911 opportunity to show the world what global leadership really means, given up making stuff.
We’ve surrendered the future. That makes us more likely to embrace antique theologies—whether Biblical, Koranic or Mormon.
The historian Richard Hofstadter called it status anxiety: when the future looks bleak, humans regress (see this from my friend Jon Wiener). And the regression is particularly pernicious deep, dark and violent when the bleakness follows a period of promise (see historian Lawrence Stone’s J-curve).
George W. Bush promised the world and delivered nothing; evangelicals particularly will see dark forces at work. That should worry the rest of us—those of more liberal faith or no religious faith at all. Looking toward a bright future, Kennedy could stand on his hind legs and promise that he would not invoke God as a justification for policy nor yield to bishops in creating it; expecting the End Times, True Believers promise to subordinate every national policy to pharasitical tests based on their own narrow readings of the Bible.
