The Daily Briefing
AN OVERSIGHT OVERSIGHT
Faith based accountability
Faith, “the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1), has always been a cornerstone of Bush administration policy. The latest example comes from the Pentagon, where officials are trying to keep Congress from seeing any evidence of a plan for the war in Iraq.
In numerous interviews, General Petraeus has talked about the importance of the Joint Campaign Plan. The document lays out the military and diplomatic strategy for Iraq, and the Pentagon has so far refused to provide Congress with a copy. Well, not exactly refused, Pentagon officials did agree to turn a copy over to the House Armed Services Committee by March 30. Last March 30. And despite repeated requests since that deadline passed, Congress has still received nothing.
A Pentagon spokesperson claims it isn’t stonewalling– it’s just that Congress has requested a lot of documents in the past year, so a backlog of paperwork is responsible for the delay in handing over the Joint Campaign Plan.
It’s unknown how long the Pentagon spokesperson had practice in order to say that with a straight face.
